Fresh take on TOKARA Deli is sure to be a Winelands winner
There are those who have an appreciation for the finer things in life but who are also fairly laid back when it comes to dining out, preferring to enjoy a casual experience rather than the more formal dining options. TOKARA Deli, now under new management, has been relaunched with those people in mind.
Anne-Marie Ferreira first opened the deli in October 2009 with a dream of adding value to the TOKARA experience with a more informal venue that would showcase all that the estate had to offer. Having achieved this as well as firmly establishing the deli in the hearts of families who frequent it, Anne-Marie now wishes to spend more time with her own family and her firstborn grandchild and so she has called for the assistance of a new management team, who bring with them the culinary expertise of award-winning chef Richard Carstens. ‘I wanted a capable team to take over and as you can see they are doing a fantastic job,’ she says happily, eagerly anticipating some quality family time of her own, secure in the knowledge that her other baby is well-taken care of. Visitors to TOKARA Deli can look forward to some exciting new changes to this already popular spot.
The deli has always been family-friendly boasting one of the most elegantly beautiful play areas for children as well as an ever-changing collection of sculptures that grab the attention and imagination of children of all ages. So dining with your children needn’t mean that you have to compromise on style. But do not mistake this for one of those children’s restaurants. While children are welcome this is very much a stylish grown-up venue.
The sophisticated 60-seater bistro showcasing work by some of South Africa’s foremost furniture designers like James Mudge and Gregor Jenkins is light and airy and perfect for both adult company and relaxed family meals. A new bakery as well as a large wood-fired oven promises some delicious new additions to a menu that now has that magical Richard Carstens touch. Carstens is the consultant chef who has worked closely with deli Head Chef
Christine Claasen, bringing some exciting new changes and additions to the breakfast and lunch menus served from Tuesday to Sundays.
The fresh garden produce used in the dishes all come from the TOKARA estate and while the wine list will obviously only showcase TOKARA’s excellent and award-winning wines, there is also a craft beer and cider list that will please those wanting a cold beer with their hot gourmet pizza. This will go down very well on Fridays and Saturdays when TOKARA Deli hosts their newly introduced pizza, burger and craft beer evenings.
For those wanting the option of shopping as well as dining, (and who doesn’t?), TOKARA Deli will also be selling their signature extra virgin cold-pressed olive oil and olive products as well as other locally produced goods such as cheeses, jams, pickles, charcuterie and breads.
TOKARA Deli will be open over the festive season, which should please visitors wanting to experience its relaxed elegance enormously. And should you be planning a very special celebration in the near future do keep in mind that TOKARA Deli is available for small weddings and semi-private functions. At TOKARA Deli a breakfast for two, a lunch for 12 or a party for 60, is always cause for celebration. The casual elegance, wonderful wines, superb food and incredible views ensure it.
