Oldenburg Vineyards appoints new MD and winemaker

Oldenburg Vineyards, Stellenbosch, is pleased to announce the appointment of Philip Costandius as its Managing Director and winemaker from 1st July 2014. Philip will be responsible for all aspects of the business, with his primary focus being winemaking and viticulture.

Philip was previously cellar master and chief winemaker at Delheim, Neethlingshof and Lourensford wineries. He has also produced wine under his own label, Solo Wines. He has a vast depth of experience covering several decades and has spent time in many wine regions around the world. Philip was formerly chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild, where he established the Protégé Programme in 2006.

Adrian Vanderspuy, proprietor of Oldenburg, is very excited to have Philip on-board the Oldenburg team. “Philip was our wine consultant when we released our first vintages. It is clear to me that his wealth of knowledge and experience has had a very positive influence on our wine styles – he already has a strong affinity with and respect for our terroir and shares my belief that Oldenburg has something quite unique. ” he said.

Philip is a key addition to the relatively young Oldenburg team. Oldenburg began its new journey in 2003 and has built a very strong foundation, proving it has unique terroir capable of producing distinctive and excellent wines, all awarded both locally and internationally. “Oldenburg has magnificent terroir and has come a long way in a very short period of time. I share their vision of becoming a leading, well respected wine brand in South Africa.” said Philip.

Oldenburg Vineyards is a boutique premium wine producer in the Banghoek Valley, outside of Stellenbosch. It is a place of extraordinary peace and beauty. Since its renewal programme began in 2003, it has completely replanted all the vineyards. Its maiden vintage of red wines was released in 2010, and were all selected for the SA Top 100 Wines, amongst other awards. In 2011 Oldenburg opened its Cellar Door and in September 2014 it will open The Homestead, a luxury villa rental accommodation offering.
