Are press releases still relevant today with social media breaking news?

Press releases are news announcements meant to disseminate news to (and through) the press and to be discoverable by people looking for information about a topic or a company. In 2013, there was approximately 642,000 press releases distributed. This highlights the importance of the PR industry. There has been a lot of debate regarding social media and the impact of it on public relations, let’s focus on content marketing as an example, Only 10 to 20 percent of a company’s website content drives 90 percent of its web traffic, and only half a percent of a website’s content drives more than 50 percent of its traffic. This illustrates why South African Companies like wineries rarely acquire international attention. According to a study performed by InboundWriter, “In terms of content marketing and online publishing, the subjective ‘hit or miss’ approach is a ‘miss’ 80 to 90 percent of the time,”.

Which social media platform works best for your PR firm and why?

A PR firm or a PR communications strategy that does not incorporate social media into it is not going to be living up to the standards that are expected of a good campaign today or that will be demanded of a good campaign in the future. We utilize Facebook for interesting information and building awareness, Twitter for short interactive messages, Pinterest & Instagram for visual impact.
